Abolition of Slave Trade
This was the act of freeing slaves and stopping the use of human being as commodities. Britain was the first nation to Establish abolition of slave trade campaign. In 1833 Britain abolished slavery, in 1865 U.S.A also abolished and the total abolition of slave trade in East Africa took place during the colonial period.

Economic reasons
- The Industrial Revolution, In 19[sup]th[/sup] century Industrial and Agricultural activities were mechanized so Europeans nations produced at a greater speed than before so these machines replaced human labor in production, and machines were faster and more efficient than slave labor.
- Sugar Crisis in Europe. The sugar crisis was actually between French and the British. It was a result of competition between the two countries for markets of their sugar. Britain advocate for the abolition of Slave trade in order to limit French sugar production.
- The demand of Capitalist production, under capitalist production needed worker to seek employers. Employers owned the means of production. There was great demand for raw materials to be utilize the machines in Europe and yield profit.
- Religious groups and other citizens in Europe argued that slave trade and slavery were against God’s will. They religious people called slavery and slave trade ‘sinful’ .John Wesley was one of the champions of these religious anti-slavery movements.
Humanitarian Reasons
- These humanitarian reasons were initiated by people like Wilberforce, Thomas Charkson and others. They believed that slave trade society was formed in 1787. In 1823 I became the British Anti-slavery society. It campaigns helped to influence the public and parliament against the slavery and slave trade activities.
- French Revolution of 1789, this revolution had its core ideas of fraternity, Liberty and Equality for all human beings. This led French intellectuals to criticize slavery in Europe and White world.
TACTICS USED TO ABOLISH SLAVE TRADE
Abolitionist and humanitarians used several methods to pressure nations to abolish slave trade in the world. These tactics include the following;
- They used campaign meetings, sometimes they asked freed slaves to address the realities and how they were mistreated in slavery.
- Anti-Slavery trade patrol ships from Britain, they patrolled the seas to prevent ships from sailing from Africa with slaves.
- Intellectuals and writers used books, newspapers and magazines to condemn slavery and slave trade.
- Treaties to stop slave trade were signed between nations. Some of the treaties signed between the Sultan of Zanzibar and the British in East Africa were;

EFFECTS OF THE ABOLITION OF SLAVE TRADE
- Expansion of legitimate trade, Instead of slaves European came to Africa in search of raw products for their industries such raw materials are groundnuts, timber, coffee, cotton, cocoa, rubber and palm oil.
- Increased of missionary activities such as spreading of Christianity, introduction of formal education and formation of trade companies.
